Ireland: Palestinian cause a domestic political issue

Condemnation of Israel's actions

Ireland is one of the few countries where Palestine and Palestinian issues on the conflict is very much a domestic political issue. Ireland's Taoiseach, or Prime Minister, was one of the first European leaders to condemn Israel's military tactics in Gaza. Ireland's Parliament voted unanimously last week to condemn Israel's de facto annexation of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank.

Recognition of Palestine

As of 2024, Ireland does not recognise the State of Palestine, but on 10 April 2024, Irish foreign minister Micheál Martin told The Journal that Ireland "will give full consideration to recognising the State of Palestine."

Support for Palestinian civilians

In Ireland, support for Palestinian civilians runs deep rooted in what many see as a shared history of British colonialism and the experience.
