Le Pen severs ties with German far-right ally AfD
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has announced her party will end cooperation with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the next European Parliament elections.
Le Pen said the decision was made after AfD lead candidate Joerg Meuthen made comments that were "unacceptable" and "revisionist".
Meuthen had said that the Nazi era was not as "bad" as it was often portrayed, and that Germany should be proud of its military history.
Le Pen said her party, the National Rally, would no longer work with the AfD because it "no longer represents the values that we share".
The decision is a blow to the far-right in Europe, which has been trying to forge closer ties between its different national parties.
It could also make it more difficult for the AfD to win seats in the next European Parliament elections, which are due to be held in 2024.
